NameCrane Offloaded SQL is now in public BETA!
Hello everyone!
We're happy to announce that we're in the process of rolling out a "Managed Databases", or "Offloaded SQL" product for NameCrane. We've had quite the increase in MySQL heavy websites causing quite the mess during peak hours.
Features
- Based on MariaDB 11.4. Given the nature of the product we hope to also offer PostgreSQL.
- High performance hardware (top performing CPU's for MySQL, 1 million IOPS enteprise NVMEs, tons of RAM).
- Colocated on the same LAN/switch as our shared/reseller hosting, giving you ~0.1ms latency/
- phpMyAdmin available with a whitelabeled domain. Users can point their own domains to the server and an SSL will automagically be assigned.
- Hourly backups with probably 24 - hours of retention, as well as DR backups. Not implemented yet, but should be ready by the time this is out of BETA.
Pricing
We're aiming around $0.35 - $0.50 per GB of storage, per year. So, 10GB of database storage would be $5.00/year.
Ordering
You can order the service at https://namecrane.com/store/networking/managed-databases . This service currently only available in Las Vegas, but we expect it to be live in the Netherlands in the next couple weeks.
Other locations will follow as demand dictates.
What's Franned?
The current hardware is not the final specs we'll be rolling with. The node we bought for this came in damaged to the point we physically can't use one of the front drive bays, half the ram won't show up, and 2 of the PCI slots won't respond. We expect replacement hardware next week, at which point we'll migrate everything over.
It should still perform quite well, but it'll absolutely haul ass once moved.
Feedback either on here or our Discord would be highly appreciated!

Awesome
If I had a prior service with offloaded db, how would it impact? Can I migrate there? Will the pricing change?
...you mean with another host or are you talking about once the BETA is done?
Need some context, friend

Maybe they're on about coming from BuyVM's version?

Nice, im going to wait for NYC
Would there be a performance difference if someone used the offloaded SQL from NameCrane shared/reseller compared to using the built in DB from their account?
almost none, since they are on the same network it would be like using a it on the same host, but being a dedicated system for the sql it would be faster overall if the main system is struggling due to scripts and calls
Ouch.
Cool developments I must say
A tad unrelated, but what's the status on the Luxembourg departure? I've been bit out of the loop.
Thanks

Coming from buyvm
I have one service somewhere with offloaded sql
Aah
well, you shouldn't be moving from buyvm to this since the latency will be worse.
I've fixed a few bugs and improved the UX on the Users modal. Added a password generator and made the show password toggle more sane.

DB Shenker is set to pickup the crate from Vegas in the next day or two. I'm hoping to have it in NL by EOW, but who knows.

Cloudlinux makes things a lot uglier than it needs to be when it comes to SQL. We've had many many times where if it's trying to rate limit too many users, it'll just randomly deadlock MySQL and it hits 2400% CPU (literally every core maxed out). Its caused multiple outages over the past few months.
The offload just allows for more room to burst, leaving more CPU for PHP and things like that.

Thanks for the update, I appreciate it.
Which NorthC DC is it exactly if I may ask?
Thanks

AMS.
We'll be using Eranium's network and peering on ERA-IX right away.

Thanks. Looking forward to it

Wouldn't this normally have volume pricing and/or transaction limits? Or a fair use concept?
This is very much a fair share product.
99% of our customers will be fine with that. When we see people being obviously abusive, we'll deal with them.

Wait so BuyVM LV and NameCrane LV are in different network/location?
Both are in Fiberhub, but Namecrane is in its own rack. The latency isn't much (if the routing isn't broken), but it's still there.
There's no reason to move to this from BuyVM's, if you're using it with a Slice.

Any ETA on PostgreSQL? Would be great if we could use this + Hyperdrive
Will this be available from external ips as well, or only from internal ones?
Hey teamacc. You're a dick. (c) Jon Biloh, 2020.
I need to learn how to safely create users and grant access. It seems PostgreSQL is a lot more involved and I want to make sure we're covered.
We aren't blocking external usage, but I think if we make this a standalone product we'll have 2 tiers of pricing, where 'primarily remote usage" would charge a bit more (0.75/G/year?), and 'primarily internal usage' with a crate we give the discounted price.
All depends on if we want to allow it to be purchased stand alone or not.
I do think if we did allow 'standalone' that we'd put some servers in Kansas & over in Switzerland too, get pretty good coverage.

So Switzerland is also still happening?
