  • Is there a tutorial to setup torrents on nat vps? Appreciate any help on this..

    • install qbittorrent-nox from repo, enable the service if applicable
    • configure it following docs, set webui listen port to one of the 5 ports assigned to your vm (you can save a port by assign a different one when you use reverse proxy for all your http/s services)
    • click gear icon in webui, set port to another assigned port under connection tab
    • add a torrent and start downloading
    • on the lower right towards the middle of webui, if you see a yellow plug icon turning into a green globe then you're good to go

    This is unsafe.
Pick a non-mapped port and listen on 127.0.0.1 only.
Access the WebUI via SSH tunnel.

I use randomly generated string as subfolder for reverse proxy and hope no one could guess. :#

Hacker connects to your LowEndSeedbox and deletes torrents.
Private tracker sees HnR and bans your account.

Hacker connects to your LowEndSeedbox and uploads kiddy popcorn content.
You have to discuss this matter in Romania courts.

If you want to go the extra safe route, run qbittorrent-nox in a Docker container, run OpenVPN-client or Wireguard-client in another container.
Use network_mode: container:yourvpnclient on qbittorrent to force the connection through an OpenVPN server, qbittorrent wont be able to connect to the internet unless the OpenVPN connection is made, prevents leaking anything traceable.

Edit: then access the WebUI via SSH tunnel or Cloudflare for persistent access.

Doesn't the hacker need to compromise the web interface password to accomplish any of this? It seems most seedboxes use a torrent client this way. Assuming the password doesn't suck it sounds like a very low risk scenario, though I agree that moving to an ssh tunnel secured by ssh key is the most secure option.

HTTP: your password is on the wire.
HTTPS: it's secure, but getting a certificate without port 443 is difficult.

Just get a real domain and use DNS verification method for certbot
