I will be honest with you. I have some good friends from a certain nation, but for me, it's very hard to discuss these things with those same people (I generalize now, but still...), and please don't take this as an offense. To me, it looks sometimes like you live in some deep slumber, dreaming about the old days and blaming the West for all your misery.
Not to mention all those pathetic statements I hear regularly: "Together we would be the strongest," "Americans screwed us," and so on. Fuck this. Always, really always, blaming someone else for your (I don't mean your in person) own misery.
And while you're dreaming about how great YOU were in the past and how great it would be to stay together, how screwed we all are because we're separate, ask a Croatian, ask a Slovenian how they feel about being "together" in Yugoslavia.
You're actually never interested in others, in how they feel about all those things, if they actually want to be part of your ex-country, and so on. It's always just about you, you, and more you (again, I am not talking about you personally).
You see, I like my country and my life here where I am. I'm not saying that everything is perfect, far from it, but I also don't idealize the past. Of course, in the past, everything seems better, but in reality, we were just young, innocent, and didn’t know much.
You have so much to say about the EU, but in reality, what do you really know? The EU isn't perfect, far from it, but do you see your country, where young people are eager to leave, as perfect? Corruption, political instability, social inequality, and so on... that's not what the West is doing to you. You're talking about control? How is this worse than all control, media, and everything being in the hands of one political group? I'm pretty sure you know whom I'm talking about.
People should first sweep in front of their own doorstep before judging others.
And don't get me wrong, the EU has its own problems, far from everything being perfect, but if I have to choose between the EU and the alternatives offered by the rest who like to talk about EU so much, I'll pick the EU every time. When I weigh all the pluses and minuses, I see more advantages to being in the EU than disadvantages.
Please don't take this personally, it's not directed at you specifically, it just pissed me off every time people try to be patronizing, acting like they know more, while every other alternative (and especially their own) is even worse than what we have.
Every part of the world has its own issues, but I’d still choose the "dictatorship" of the EU over the dictatorship of local sheriffs who really don’t give a shit about their own people, even in the slightest, and are prepared to go much further to crush any opposition, free thought, and so on...
