Free subdomain
in Help
Hello all,
Is there a place that provides a free subdomain that works as a paid top level domain - and has been operating for many years, so you know they will stick around for a long time without issues?
Have you ever used them? Have experience to share?

I use it since the late 90s 👌

I have been using FreeDNS (afraid.org) for 10 years and can vouch for the owner. If you use the free version, you must login a few times a year to keep your account active, but it sends automatic email reminders.
FreeDNS (afraid.org) offers free subdomains, and I also use them for dynamic DNS. When I did more business travel, I used it to connect to my home network, which has a dynamic IP address.

Yeah Josh's a cool guy.
My afraid.org account was registered back in 2006.
I used to "contribute" public domains for IRCnetizens and EFnetizens
If you really want a free subdomain that works as a paid top level domain, then you would do best to pay for a top level domain
Otherwise, you can get a free subdomain that may or may not work as a paid top level domain

EU.org, free domain names since 1996
I've been using this one for two years, but only as intermediate API endpoint.
HostBrr aff best VPS; VirmAche aff worst VPS.

are u still on IRCnet ?
Another vote for freedns.afraid.org. Been using them for DNS also for about 15 years or so. I'm also using 'em for dyn dns services as well. Top notch.
Yes, but only in private channels with old friends, who are also admins/opers on other networks.
Hi,
I have a quick question about freedns.afraid.org: I created a free subdomain a few weeks ago and wanted to connect it with my hosting at infinityfree for some experiments. To do this I either need to make a NS-record or a CNAME-record, but it says I need a special permission to make those types of records. I wrote an e-mail to Josh to request this permission but I haven't heard anything back. Do I have to do something? Or just be patient?
Kind regards

Maybe your account was flagged or something. I've used all types of records on afraid.org (namely CNAME/A) but just to verify, tried creating a subdomain with a CNAME record and it worked fine (non-premium account)
The domain that you selected for a your subdomain - is it marked "public" or "private?" Can you get a screenshot of the data you entered and the error? As long as you're not flagged for whatever reason, should be a quick fix.
EU.org has not been responding in a long time for new subdomain requests.
pp.ua is free subdomain
@don_keedic
Here are some screenshots. I just select the subdomain. Then I choose NS and add the record (yes, I wrote "Infinityfree" wrong, I know) and solve the recaptcha. But then this kind of error shows up.
I have a free account. It says the account type is "Basic".

there's a chinese guy collecting a sort of free domains, you might give him a shot

Why were those chickums exterminated?
Ahhhhh ok I see. Well I'm not sure of the root cause of the issue but I was able to make an NS record (albeit with a slightly different name)
So I believe the issue stems from the fact you're trying to create an NS record for a user created DDNS domain and for whatever reason why, they're not keen on allowing it to happen. I wouldn't hold my breath on them enabling it for you.
If you're wanting to experiment and don't want to deal with a bunch of bs, I, myself, would just purchase a cheap domain that's on sale and link it up with Bunny.net DNS and call it a day. Don't have any of the limitations you'd have at Afraid and it's a one-time fee (for the domain - unless you're planning on using more than 20 million queries a month)
Hope that helps!
Yeah, I'll probably do this. FreeDNS and EU.ORG just annoy me at this point 😒.
But thanks a lot for your help!
Kind regards
Why not create a subdomain host?
Can you get a subdomain from Afraid and point its NS records to another DNS service?
No, I don't think so. (In a way, the whole point of free subdomains from afraid.org is that they use afraid.org's DNS)
"A single swap file or partition may be up to 128 MB in size. [...] [I]f you need 256 MB of swap, you can create two 128-MB swap partitions." (M. Welsh & L. Kaufman, Running Linux, 2e, 1996, p. 49)
Oddly, they have an option to enter an "NS" record, though only one not two.
I wasn't aware of this!
Just curious: why not use afraid.org's DNS for a subdomain there?
"A single swap file or partition may be up to 128 MB in size. [...] [I]f you need 256 MB of swap, you can create two 128-MB swap partitions." (M. Welsh & L. Kaufman, Running Linux, 2e, 1996, p. 49)
I'd prefer to consolidate all my domain names' DNS with Cloudflare or HE.
Also though they only do redirection.
