(Quote) Indeed; my main production stuff was v6-only for the last few years. The idea that v6 is somehow tricky or complicated is just absurd.

(Quote) Eloped with Virmach.
-
(Quote) Having used both over the years, the different to your average user between DA and cPanel is ... minimal.

(Quote) Doesn't Gmail expect DMARC these days?
-
(Quote) Well, second best maybe... ;-) (Spoiler)
-
(Quote) Yeah, it was too special to resist.

(Quote) I wouldn't worry too much about it; Pis are pretty good at throttling themselves before they actually do any damage (to themselves; they might still set fire to your bench)
-
(Quote) Or just netboot the Pi. Problem solved (although you do then need a server to netboot it off...)

(Quote) Rock solid, fast - been slowly shifting sites from various places and it's all good. Now if Fran can stop fiddling with cPanel tools long enough to sort out IPv6, it'll be perfect :-)

Grab a basic shared hosting from anyone (NameCrane have UK and EU locations, and would be my go to these days) and just ignore the hosting bits you don't want? :-)

(Quote) I have to admit, I read it as something more like "that's a rec(ommendation)" and didn't take in that it was an affiliate link. Then again, I just hovered over it, saw Serverica's name and went straight there (sorry!) so it all wor…

(Quote) Cheers; that was the name lurking at the back of my mind that I couldn't quite remember!
-
(Quote) Yes, I've seen that (and it was one of the things that poked me back into looking at backup options), but ... there might be other options? If I just meant "I'm too dumb to read a thread on the front page", I'd have said that ;-)

(Quote) Well how else do you log into your MUD?!
-
(Quote) I stand corrected, but I still say it's a crazy way to go.
-
(Quote) Nobody remotely sane is selling shared hosting out of a VPS. Just grab a cheap dedi if you're eager to start out low end DIY, or a decent reseller if you just want to get going.

Wow, he really does have a track record. I think it's pretty clear we're out of "is this a spammer" territory then

(Quote) Are you in any way related to this Diwakar? https://lowendtalk.com/discussion/173116/youstable-are-spammers
-
Meh; the boilerplate generated is mostly junk - at some point in the next couple of years there's gonna be some catastrophic system failures somewhere, and it's going to turn out to be because of some generated code crap that nobody checked/understo…

(Quote) Given that more and more programming-related questions I now see start with "I have this code that {random AI shitpile} wrote for me...", I can only see this crap generating more work for me, fixing the messes it makes. I don't se…

(Quote) That's just what ChatGPT would say!

Oh great, now we've got pointless ChatGPT answers to pointless ChatGPT questions.

(Quote) He's always been a bit keen to show off how he has the inside scoop on everything (regardless of whether or not he actually does). But I guess he brings in the clicks for the other place

(Quote) Thanks for that; it finally prompted me to export my data and get it into OTPClient.

Thank you for your valuable insight, DiwkarGPT.

I can't decide if a self-hosted 2FA web app is a brilliantly cunning plan, or a crushingly bad one.

By eye, I'd say IPv6 traffic outweighs IPv4 by about 2 to 1, measured on my router. Need to gather some longer term data to get more concrete numbers. (and of course a chunk of the lingering IPv4 traffic will be to places like Github...)
-
Oh FFS.

(Quote) I can't think of a single game I've tried to run from my Steam library that doesn't work fine under Linux - Proton does an amazing job (although I often have to peg it to v7, for some reason)

(Quote) Alpine is used for Docker containers a lot because it's small (or at least, can be made small). If you're low on resources, don't have a desktop. Command line is king.

(Quote) You might as well ask to compare vi and emacs; they're all functionally similar, but users of one will be passionate about how great their chosen one is and how terrible the others are, without being able to put their fingers on much concret…

Ubuntu and ... not a clue. Whatever it came with by default, I guess?

(Quote) If you don't know what you want to do with one, why do you want one?

(Quote) Because I wasn't exactly stretching the hardware limits, and it de-risked me from an ageing CPU / HDD crapping out on me. Even leaving aside the fact that a decent VPS offering probably isn't running on a creaky old Xeon, they are going to r…
