Hmm should I keep this OneProvider server

edited August 2022 in General

I've already got and OVH server from SoYouStart series
(SYS-3-SSD-32 / E3 1245v5 / 32GB DDR4 / 2x480GB SSD / 250Mbps Network / RBX πŸ‡«πŸ‡· / 28.99€ month)

The real question is, should I switch from OVH to Online.net/OneProvider?

Today I've bought a server from OneProvider, for the first time (I know a lot of negative reviews, saw them), and this is what I've got for 24.99€ in PAR πŸ‡«πŸ‡·.

Xeon E3-1220 v2 or better (got the better one haha), 32GB DDR3, 2 x 1TB SSD, 1 Gbps Unmetered, 1 Gbps Guaranteed.

    She needs more practice

  • Pros for the SoYouStart/OVH system:

    Pros for the OneProvider/Online.Net system:

    • Better network (their claim of unmetered 1Gbps is legitimate in my experience)
    • Bigger and likely newer SSDs
    • Slightly better price

So, I would ask myself these questions, with consideration for future growth/changes:

    • Do I need 1Gbps of network throughput?
    • Do I need 1TB SSDs for additional storage?
    • Do I need the improved CPU performance and increase memory speed for my workloads?
    • How likely will I need assistance from support in the future?

    Hope this helps.

    Thanked by (1)Asim

Cheap dedis are my drug, and I'm too far gone to turn back.

  • keep it, cancel ovh. 250mbps has no place in today's world.

    1. Everyone likes 1Gbps unmetered
    2. My NextCloud instance will love 1TB SSDs
    3. I will cry becase of that
    4. Their support is quick, they responded in 10 minutes after the ticket was created (verification, additional IPs). OVH is not that quick, you need to call them for quick support.

    @vish
I agree, I hate that 250Mbps and the SSD drives are 4-5 years old.

  • SYS = no additional IP at a one-off cost vs. OP = additional IP at a typical provider's fee.
(If important at all to you.)

2 IP at OP will cost me 10€ total, so with the server 34.99€ per month total.

I don't know. The OVH network and the 250Mbps... and 5 yo ssd's. Imagine running 5 vms with 5 free IPs on the fckn 250Mbps. That's slap in the face.

I'm running a chat website, people are sending pics, voice messages, etc. Idk.

The money is not a problem in this up to 35€ range, I would just like to have peace of minds for the future.

Hetzner is going to rise prices for 10%, maybe on IPs too. So France providers have better deal in low end range.

  • Fuck off OVH, they're shitcunts.

I'm trying to convince myself that I don't need 16 free IP addresses that are mostly blacklisted to have them on a 250Mbps network.

Maybe just convince yourself that you don't want to contribute to a bottom-of-the-barrel providers continued domination of the EU budget server space. FUCK. THOSE. CUNTS. RIGHT. OFF.

They won't be free for long anyways. They're beginning to charge a monthly fee for IPV4 as well.

So at the end paying 34€ to OP with 2 additional IPs is better solution.

Btw. got cool IP with 9s haha.

Sounds like the move to the OneProvider/Online.net system is the right move for you, then. NextCloud doesn't typically need the best CPUs to function well, in my experience. The extra network speed will be the biggest thing you will likely notice immediately.

Cheap dedis are my drug, and I'm too far gone to turn back.

What network/provider is that on? OneProvider resells a bunch of providers (Including OVH).
From the network bench I assume it's Scaleway/Online.net but would be nice to have confirmation.
